At Hospitality Action, we're incredibly grateful to work with partners who share our commitment to supporting hospitality people in their hour of need. We recently caught up with John Neilson, General Manager at LAUNDREVO who explains the Hotel Action Programme, and why investing in our industry's people is so important.

What inspired LAUNDREVO to partner with Hospitality Action?

LAUNDREVO was inspired to partner with Hospitality Action because both share a commitment to supporting people working in the hospitality industry, particularly those facing financial hardship, mental health challenges, or personal crisis. This partnership allows LAUNDREVO to really contribute to a very worthy charity that provides practical assistance, advice, and wellbeing services to people who work in the industry that gives LAUNDREVO its business opportunities.

Tell us about the Hotel Action Programme and how it benefits both hotels and Hospitality Action?

Hospitality Action provides practical and emotional support to people working across the UK hospitality industry when they face hardship. To provide these services requires funding so the LAUNDREVO/Hospitality Action programme achieves two key aspects to assist with this:

1.    Any hospitality business, big or small, that participates in the programme will receive a 20% reduction against their current suppliers invoice; and

2.    Whatever amount we invoice the hospitality business, 10% of that invoice for an independent operator, or 15% for a chain operator, we will donate to Hospitality Action in their name.

For example:

If two chefs ask us to supply their restaurant table linen, they give us their required specifications, we supply and clean the table linen and charge them only 80% of the current cost their current supplier charges them for renting/cleaning their table linen. They save 20% and then we donate 10% or 15% of their monthly bill to Hospitality Action in their name. So, if we are invoicing participants in the programme £1 million a year (100 accounts spending £200 a week or 50 accounts spending £400 a week) then Hospitality Action will receive a donation of £100,000 in the name of these participants.

What does giving back to the hospitality industry mean to you personally?
I have worked in the hospitality industry since 1980 in a variety of countries. From my own perspective giving back to the hospitality industry is about recognising that the industry only works because of the people behind it, often underpaid, overworked, and invisible when things are running smoothly. We are an industry that can only function with people, AI/Technology can help but you can't operate a hospitality business without people! On a personal level, it means using my time, skills, or platform to improve conditions for these people, whether that’s supporting wellbeing initiatives, mentoring or making a financial donation.

Would you encourage other hospitality suppliers to support Hospitality Action?

Yes, I think that there is too much emphasis on profitability, repaying investors, paying shareholder dividends and not enough emphasis on giving the people who make the business profitable, whether that be a Kitchen Porter or a General Manager, a fair share financially. All suppliers who profit from selling their goods and services to the hospitality industry should be encouraged to support Hospitality Action. This will strengthen their corporate social responsibility and ESG credentials by showing a genuine commitment to the wellbeing of the hospitality workforce. This will improve brand reputation with clients who increasingly prefer to work with socially responsible suppliers.

Thank you John and everyone at LAUNDREVO for championing Hospitality Action and for creating an initiative that gives back to the people at the heart of hospitality.
