Blog. What delegates really think about Arena Futures Networking Navigator.

We’re incredibly grateful to our friends at Arena, the UK’s leading hospitality networking association, for their unwavering support over the past two decades.

Through fundraising at their annual Savoy Lecture and Christmas Lunch, Arena has raised significant funds to help Hospitality Action support people across our industry when they need us most.

We’re also delighted to see Arena launch its new networking programme, designed to bring hospitality professionals together to build meaningful connections. For many people, networking can feel daunting. Whether you're new to the industry or have spent years within the same organisation, knowing how to build meaningful professional relationships doesn't always come naturally.

Arena Futures' Networking Navigator programme was created to change that. Combining interactive workshops, one-to-one coaching and practical networking opportunities, the programme helps delegates develop the confidence and skills to build genuine, long-term industry relationships.

We spoke to the people behind the programme, as well as previous delegates, to find out what makes Networking Navigator different and the impact it's had on those who have taken part.

Why do people join Networking Navigator?

According to Lorraine Wood, Director of Arena, most delegates arrive recognising the value of networking but wanting a more structured approach.

"One of the biggest reasons people join the programme is because they recognise the value of networking but aren't always sure how to approach it with purpose. Whether they're new to the industry or have simply never had the opportunity to build relationships beyond their own organisation, they're looking for practical techniques, greater confidence and a network that genuinely adds value to both their career and their business."

What surprises people most?

For Graham Stonadge of Performance Works, who leads the programme in partnership with William Murray PR and Marketing, delegates often discover that networking isn't what they expected.

"Many people arrive thinking networking is about selling yourself or collecting as many business cards as possible. One of the biggest shifts we see is when delegates realise it's actually about building authentic, long-term relationships. Once they understand that, networking becomes much more natural, enjoyable and effective."

What changes after the programme?

For previous delegate Rebecca Mehta, Sales and Operations Manager at Action Foods, the biggest difference has been approaching networking with much greater intention.

"I now approach each interaction outside of our business with a plan rather than just hoping to meet the right people. I prepare for events beforehand, make a conscious effort to introduce myself to people I don't know and, most importantly, I follow up afterwards. That simple change has led to some really valuable conversations and relationships that I'm not sure would have happened otherwise."

Graham sees similar changes across every cohort.

"The biggest transformation is confidence. Delegates begin the programme feeling unsure about how to approach networking, but by the end they're walking into events with a clear plan, starting conversations more naturally and following up with purpose. They leave with practical tools they can use immediately, alongside a network they've already begun to build."

Would previous delegates recommend it?

The answer, according to Olly White, Senior Public Relations Executive at Bidfood UK, is simple.

"I'd say go for it. Whether you're early in your career or have been in the industry for years, everyone can benefit from being more intentional about building relationships. The programme gives you practical tools that you can start using immediately, but perhaps more importantly, it gives you the confidence and opportunities to put them into practice."

The next Arena Futures Networking Navigator cohort begins on 20 August, with a limited number of places still available.

If you're not quite ready to commit to the full programme, why not join the next Arena Futures event on 8th July? It's the perfect opportunity to experience Arena Futures, practise networking in a relaxed environment, meet members of the Networking Navigator team and some of the upcoming cohort, and hear from senior leaders including Michael Andersen (Sysco GB), GianMarco Carlà (Big Mamma Group) and Jocelyn Neve (Seafood Pub Company).
