We’re delighted to announce that this year’s Summer Cycle Challenge, sponsored by Agilysys, will take place on Monday 22 June, with the stunning Lainston House serving as host venue. To mark the occasion, we sat down with Steve Lewis, General Manager at Lainston House and host of this year’s Summer Cycle Challenge, to talk about why the event matters, what participants can expect, and how the event helps support people across the hospitality industry.

What are your highlights from last year's Summer Cycle Challenge?

The team and I were excited and proud to welcome friends, colleagues and industry contacts to Lainston House and showcase the very best of what we do in a beautiful environment. The great weather helped too!

The hotel was the start and end point for 100+ riders exploring the Hampshire countryside and local hospitality businesses - who could forget the homemade sausage rolls at The Boot? Meeting new people, reconnecting with old friends, and chatting while riding in the sunshine was brilliant.

It was a privilege to host such a special event, and raising nearly £40,000 for Hospitality Action was the icing on the cake. We can't wait to do it again and improve on the total!

What can participants look forward to this year?

Riders can expect a very well organised cycling experience, with three route distances (40, 60 and 100 miles) to suit all abilities. They'll receive excellent support at Lainston House before and after the ride, as well as from partners providing premium nutrition, tech, kit and equipment.

Each route also takes in Hampshire hospitality venues offering much-needed sustenance along the way. At its heart, this is a community-based ride bringing colleagues and friends from across the hospitality industry together to cycle through the countryside for a fantastic cause.

What would you say to someone who's unsure if the challenge is for them?

Our aim is to provide a really enjoyable day out, an inclusive and do-able bike ride for those who enjoy being outdoors, riding and being part of a community event. There is no need for a lot of previous experience. All abilities will be represented, from those who regularly do long distance cycling events to those who have dusted off the bike and are looking for a fun challenge this summer.

The only pre-requisites to taking part are a bike that is in sound condition, a helmet, and a smile. The camaraderie that is created between the riders on this day is second to none, the sense of satisfaction at the end is wonderful, and we celebrate with a well-deserved BBQ, post-event drink and party in the hotel's legendary kitchen garden at the end of the ride.

What advice would you give to people taking part for the first time?

The key thing about the Summer Cycle Challenge is that it is a community event. There are no winners or losers, we are all in it for the same reason - a great day out, exercise, the thrill of riding and the satisfaction of knowing that we have done something good for others.

From the moment they arrive, participants are warmly welcomed by the volunteers and made to feel part of the big team. No one rides along and there is full support throughout the day. Choosing the right distance is important, and many choose to ride in a small group of friends or colleagues to ensure a team-feel from start to finish.

My advice would be to give it a go - everyone I spoke to in 2025 said they had a brilliant day and we want to make it bigger and better in 2026 for Hospitality Action, so get signed up and see you there!

You have raised over £25,000 for your chosen charities. Why did you choose to support Hospitality Action?

Hospitality Action does incredible work for people in our industry. Hospitality is about people, whether that be caring for guests, creating experiences or working as a team, but behind the scenes, it can be tough. Many people face challenges like mental health struggles, financial hardship, or the pressure of juggling work and family life.

Hospitality Action provides practical help, training and wellbeing support to those who need it most. Choosing to raise money for them felt like a way to give back to an industry that has given so much to so many people in our industry. Knowing that the funds will directly support people at difficult times made every mile of this challenge worthwhile.

Why do you believe it's so important for people to support Hospitality Action?

From the outside, it's easy to imagine that hospitality is all glamour, beautiful places, and incredible food and drink. While there are many moments like this, the industry can also be a tough place at times. Thanks to the 100+ riders who took part in the Summer Cycle Challenge in 2025, we're able to make a meaningful difference and help those who may be facing unexpected hardship.

The work that Hospitality Action do genuinely changes lives, supporting thousands of people through extremely challenging situations. We never know when we might need help, so I'm always honoured to support their work. The Summer Cycle Challenge raises money, strengthens connections, and showcases exceptional venues, while bringing the industry together for a greater cause. I've seen first-hand the impact HA can make and feel very privileged to be involved.
